Originally born in the city, Derleth joined Lliara's faith as a young boy, as a means for seeking out his fortune. He does not so much revere Lliara as he respects her: from her scriptures he learned she was not always a goddess, but became one as a result of great deeds. This brought home fully to the faithful that great risk is what is needed for great reward. Although being a god is not his aim, Derleth does wish to follow in his patron goddess' footsteps in search of such reward.
The Quickfoot family is a successful one in Waterhavian commerce -- not super rich, but rich enough to be involved in the power games of the nobles and politicos of Waterdeep. The family is currently headed by Alynna and Gervan Quickfoot, and Derleth has one sister, Shaerl. But Derleth wasn't one for resting on his father's laurels. He wanted to do something, be something, besides simply his father's son and inheritor of whatever wealth the family gained. He wanted to make his own wealth. So he joined the Lliaran clergy. Besides, being as small as he was, he craved legitimacy and respect all the more. It was a little diversified, but he came to be best known for the exotics: mithril, spices, rare herbs and such.
At first, the father thought his son was just going through a phase, but eventually he started encouraging the boy. The elder Quickfoot saw not just that having an in with the Goddess of Luck could be good for his business, but also that he might be able to wield significant political power in Waterdeep. When Derleth discovered his father's plans, however, he was livid. He packed up his things, taking only that which was his and not his father's, and asked the Lliaran High priest for a transfer out of Waterdeep, deliberately abandoning his name. He's definitely a city boy, though, not country-raised, and actually has a very refined voice.
Derleth is a man of mercurial moods. He can be quick to anger and just as quick to forgive, being both a scrappy fighter and a wise healer. He has superior insight, but it is seldom used, as he is often either too self-absorbed or just too incurious about things to look at them too closely. He does have a love of precious metals and gems, often preferring them over other kinds of rewards, and often losing them during gambling, a result which he takes urbanely in stride. The few personal buttons that he does have pertain to his friends, racism, and malevolent cruelty. He loves food, drink, and a good pipe. While he can tell a bawdy tale as well as anyone else, he is surprisingly silent around the direct presence of women, and even meek around those aggressive enough to become adventurers or who assume other potential positions of power.
